Just 15-minute drive from Bentota is the village of Kosgoda, best known as the location of the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project. It started back in 1988 as an initiative of monitoring local sea turtle population and preservation of local nesting sites.
Today it is one of the most important institutions dedicated to protecting these magnificent but endangered creatures. Their main activity is the hatchery, where turtle eggs collected from nesting grounds are given a chance to hatch away from and protected from predators and many other dangers.
This way little baby turtles are being given a head start in life and greater chances to reach the sea and survive the part of their life when they are the most vulnerable.
Just 25-minute drive from Bentota is Balapitiya, a town located on the banks of Madu Ganga River where you can enjoy a riverboat safari tour. Along with Maduganga and Randombe lakes, it makes the Madu Ganga Wetland.
Though just a minor watercourse, it is home to more than 300 plant species and 250 vertebrate species. Which makes it one of the more significant biodiversity hotspots in Sri Lanka.
Taking a boat ride through the estuary of Madu Ganga, and many islands covered in mangrove forests is the thing every nature lover absolutely must embark on.
In the Maduganga lake is located a peculiar island, which is well worth visiting. Cinnamon Island is almost wholly made of a cinnamon plantation, ages old and run by the same family for generations.
Here you can learn about the techniques of producing this spice from the bark of the true cinnamon tree, which is lauded around the world as having a superior quality to other types of cinnamon.
Bentota and surrounding areas are quite peaceful and scenic. Fishing villages, coconuts estates, Katukoliha and Mullegoda temples, blue waters of Dedduwa Lake, beautiful colonial-era buildings and houses, and many more sights make the panorama you will enjoy while touring this area on a bicycle.
