Day 01 – Kandy

Kandy

You will be welcomed at the Bandaranaike International Airport by the T2 Travel staff, from there we head to the hill capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site – Kandy.

After checking in to the hotel, you can relax and get ready for the tour!

Temple of the Tooth

DaladaMaligawa or Temple of the Tooth is at the heart of the city. It is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka since it houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha.

The sacred relics are well guarded in a golden stupa shaped casket and visitors get a chance to see this casket thrice a day.

The temple is located in the former royal palace complex. The grandeur of the building is evident with the pristine white walls, vibrant circular roof, carvings, and a moat that surrounds the complex.

Peradeniya Botanical Garden

This is one of the most scenic places to visit in Kandy. Dating back to the 14th century when the country was ruled by kings, the botanical was built on the banks of the Mahaweli River.

The garden is sprawled on 150 acres of land and there’s much to see in this beautiful green space.

The garden was once confined to the royal family members and friends but once the British colonized the area, the garden was open to the public.

There are smaller garden spaces within the botanical garden. The orchid patches, spice gardens, bamboo tree paths, and the palm tree avenue are some of the highlights of the location.

At the far end of the garden, there is a hanging bridge that connects the garden with the Gonnoruwa School of Agriculture. The bridge runs across the longest river in the country – Mahaweli River.

The British constructed the bridge in 1930 and today it remains as one of the highlights.

Visit a carpentry workshop

Woodcarving is very popular in Kandy and is a traditional art form in Sri Lanka. You must take the time to visit one of the workshops where you get beautiful ornaments, furniture, and masks made by creative craftsman.

Gemstone workshop tour

Take a tour of a gemstone workshop when you are in Kandy. The tour covers the complete process of refining the glistening stones from the time they are mined.

The tedious process of creating a sparkling jewel is not the easiest thing to do. You can even buy yourself a precious jewel once you are done with the tour!

Day 02 – Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya

On your second day of the tour, we take you to (literally) the coolest city in the charming hill country.

This wet and rainy town is beautifully green. Home to extensive tea plantations, it is one of the best places to enjoy a quiet holiday exploring a unique part of Lanka.

Visit a tea plantation

Tea drinkers may already know that Ceylon Tea (Sri Lanka was formerly known as Ceylon) is famous around the world.

Sri Lanka is one of the highest tea producing countries in the world and NuwaraEliya is where the majority of the local tea is planted and produced. In NuwaraEliya not only can you visit the tea gardens but also learn the process of tea making.

You need not be a tea drinker to fall in love with the acres and acres of perfectly manicured green tea bushes, which are stimulants to your eyes.

You can snap pictures of the female tea pickers that carry baskets on their backs while carefully picking the best leaves out of the lot.

Once you are done admiring the greenery, you can head inside to the tour of the factory.

These tours are free of charge but include a staff member who will be your guide. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy a refreshing cuppa that is served complimentarily.

Explore the waterfalls

NuwaraEliya is home to more than thirty waterfalls. If you enjoy hiking and chasing waterfalls, then this is your place. Lover’s Leap, Ramboda Falls, St. Claire’s Falls, and Devon Falls are few of the popular ones.

You will see people swimming in some of these waterfalls but it is not recommended since the water pressure could rise and cause unnecessary accidents.

Enjoy from the outside and if you’re tempted, simply soak your feet. You need to be extra careful during the monsoon season cause that’s when the water pressure rises.

Walk around Gregory Lake

The British built the Gregory Lake during the 18th century as a way of providing electricity to the town.

The initiative to build the lake was taken by a British Governor name William Gregory, hence the name of the lake. It’s very peaceful around the lake and you can take a stroll, go fishing or boating.

There is a lot of greenery around the Gregory lake where families enjoy time with children picnicking, playing games, and pony rides.

Explore the NuwaraEiya town

A short drive from Gregory Lake will take you to the NuwaraEliya town. Here, you will realise why NuwaraEliya is fondly referred to as ‘Little England’.

The Victoria Garden named after Queen Victoria of England is one of the must-sees here. The NuwaraEliya post office is a two-story Tudor style building that depicts colonial architecture.

You will also see cottage style houses that’ll make you feel like you are in an old English village.
