This train ride begins in the charming city of Kandy. While the first hour will seem pretty ordinary, it’s only when you go up that the scenery comes into full view!

Day 2 & 3 – Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya

You will be spending the next two days of your Sri Lanka tour packages from Ahmedab in the coolest location in Sri Lanka – Nuwara Eliya.

Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Often referred to as Little England, Nuwara Eliya is located close to Ella.

A scenic city perched on the Tea Mountains with eye-catching views at every nook and corner- Nuwara Eliya is a place for the whole family. It’s one of the most popular spots among honeymooners too.

Nuwara Eliya town

Begin in your trip by exploring the Nuwara Eliya town. The well-trimmed lawns with trees blossoming with flowers, Victoria Park is a place you must explore.

Kids’ play area and picnic grounds make the park a place to spend a few hours during your stay. Once you exit Victoria Park you will see the striking post office housed in a Tudor style mansion.

The red-bricked walls and the bright orange roof is hard to miss. The building strikes out amidst the sprawling greenery of the well-maintained lawn.

Built during the 18th century during the British invasion, this century-old post office is among the oldest in Sri Lanka. It is also one of the oldest buildings in the town.

Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is a historic landmark in the country. Built during the 18th century by Sir William Gregory as a means of creating electricity. However, once it was built the lake was only used for recreation.

Over the years it has become one of the most favoured spots in Nuwala Eliya to relax and spend time. Today it has been recreated as a lake park with recreational activities.

You can go on a picnic around the lake, go on pony rides, and hop on a swan-shaped paddleboat, go jet skiing or windsurfing on the lake.

Tea plantations

Glen Falls

The 10 meter high Glen waterfall is the second-highest in Nuwara Eliya. The water flow begins from the Single Tree Mountain. The waterfall is located near the main city.

Day 4 – Bundala

Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is Sri Lanka’s premier bird-watching destination. Blessed with the best bio-diversity, Bundala is an important location in the coastal wetland.

The rich birdlife is what makes Bundala stands out from the twenty-two national parks in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a country that has a unique ecosystem and several distinct flora and fauna.

There are many national parks and nature reserves where you find a myriad of birdlife and Bundala is one of them.

Bundala was declared Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar site in the early 90’s due to the high number of birds that nest and migrate here. The Bundala Park consists of lagoons and dry thorny savannah.

The main event or the highlight of Bundala is the migration of Greater Flamingos, which flock in thousands at the park, coming from India.

You can look forward to seeing Indian Cormorant, Purple Herons, Yellow Bittern, and Black-crowned Night. It is also famous for spotting crocs.

About Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is one of the main bird watching destinations in Sri Lanka. It is the number one location to be declared a Ramsar site in the country.

The park, which is 15km east of Hambantota, is an important coastal wetland with abundant birdlife. Bundala is home to more than thirty-two species of mammals out of which five falls under the endangered list.

A paradise for bird watchers with close to two hundred species calling it home. The good news is Bundala is not merely for birding but wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to seeing elephants, turtles, crocs, and leopards there.

Things to see

Birds, birds, and more birds – A total of 197 bird species are recorded from the park, while 139 are residents the other 58 are seasonal guests.

From September to March during the northern winter, the lagoon is filled with an amazing diversity of aquatic birds.

Pelicans, painted storks, egrets, spoonbills, stints, sandpipers, plovers, terns, gulls, and ducks are some of the few from the list.

Oh, Flamingo- If you are lucky then you’ll get to see a massive flock of flamingos during your safari. The numbers vary each year however up to 2000 flamingos have been recorded here.

Mammal life – Leopards, elephants, sloth bears, mongooses, civets, rabbits, langur monkeys, and giant squirrels are some of the animals you can keep an eye out for.

How to explore the park

Go camping – If you love the outdoors then camping or glamping in Bundala will be a great idea. There are campsites located around and inside the park managed by private tour operators.

Safari – There are safari jeeps lined at the entrance to the Bundala Park. They will take you on a guided tour. Some vehicles have a guide travelling with them but some don’t. In our tour packages, we will organize a well-versed guide or naturalist to explain the tour.

The 4WD safari jeep will traverse the grounds of the bio-diverse park that begins from the north end. There’s plenty to capture on your camera so keep your fingers ready to click.

The best times for safaris are early morning and later afternoon.

Sri Lanka Tour Packages from Ahmedabad Option 2 (4 Days)

Day 1 – Dambulla

Dambulla

On your first day of the Sri Lanka tour packages from Ahmedabad, we will take you one of the most historically important cities in the country – Dambulla.

Ancient Buddhist temples and monuments, dynamic food markets, a world-famous cricket stadium, and unique nature reserves are all part of the Dambulla experience.

The first thing people think of when you talk about Dambulla is the historic Dambulla Cave Temple. We have to admit that it is truly the highlight of the town but it is not the only place to see.

Many visitors simply pass by Dambulla but why not try to stay there and enjoy the likes of this authentic Lankan village.

Rangiri Dambullu Viharaya (Dambulla Cave Temple)

The Dambulla Cave Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple dating back to the first century BC. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the well-preserved ancient temples in Asia.

To reach the temple you need to pass a steep climb. The temple consists of five caves and there are hundreds of Buddha statues of varying sizes.

The ancient murals that cover the walls and ceiling of the temple depict Buddhism and the Sinhala culture. King Valagamba found these caves when he was fledging from his enemies.

As a token of appreciation for protecting him, the King converted the caves into a Buddhist temple.

At the foot of the entrance, there are wild monkeys to greet you. It’s best not to carry any flowers, food, or drinks in your hands since the monkeys will jump at them. To enter the temple you need to purchase a ticket.

To enter the temple you need to be dressed modestly. As with any Buddhist temple you need to remove the shoes before entering.

During the afternoons the stone path gets very hot and it’s impossible to walk barefoot. Wear a pair of socks to protect your feet.

We feel that the best time to go is early morning or evening when it’s less sunny or hot.

Golden Temple

When you take a short walk fro the Dambulla Cave Temple you can reach the Golden Temple. The massive golden Buddha statue is hard to miss. There is a small museum located here too with a few artifacts.

Jathika Namal Uyana (Namal Ironwood Forest)

Namal Ironwood Forest consists mostly of ironwood trees. Dating back to the 10th century AD the forest is of ecological value. The ironwood tree is the national tree of Sri Lanka.

Rose Quartz Mountain

Apart from the ironwood trees, there is another special feature in the forest- a Rose Quartz Mountain. This is the largest rose quartz mountain in the Asian region.

The mountain range is more than five hundred years old. The mountain is made entirely of light pink coloured rose quartz, which looks so beautiful.

Rangiri Dambulu Cricket stadium

Sri Lankans love cricket just like Indians! The Rangiri Dambulu Cricket stadium hosts local and international matches.

This is your chance to watch an international cricket match in the world-class stadium. For major matches you need to make ticket booking early.

Ritigala Nature Reserve

The Ritigala Nature Reserve is an off the beaten path monument that you must visit. A small percentage of the ancient monastery is left over but it an interesting site to see.

Day 2 – Sigiriya

Enveloped by the lush greens of the central plains, Sigiriya or Lion Rock is a wonderful sight. Soaring at a height of 600 feet above the ground, Sigiriya is veiled by the mist.

Locally, Sigiriya is called the eighth world wonder and we completely agree that it deserves the title.

Sigiriya dates back to four thousand years. It was the royal palace and fortress of King Kashyapa. The kingdom had a short life span so the palace was given over to Buddhist monks to use as a monastery.

Today Sigiriya talks of fallen kings, wars, victories, and monks back in the day. History buffs and culture vultures are going to love visiting Sigiriya.

Discovering Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage site and to explore it, you must put in some effort. You need to climb 1200 steps to reach the Sigiriya summit.

The good thing about the climb is that you will be passing ancient murals, interesting architecture, and a mirror on your way to the top.

To enter Sigiriya you need to buy a ticket. The entrance ticket covers a tour of the museum. The best time to go to the museum is before the climb since you won’t be too tired then.

Sigiriya ticket counter is open from 7am to 5pm and the museum opens from 8am to 5pm.

If you are wondering how long it takes to descend 1200 steps well the whole tour will take at least 3 hours depending on your fitness level.

Royal Gardens

The well-preserved royal gardens must have been a spectacular sight back in the day. Water fountains, pools, terraced patches and boulders are part of the garden.

This one of the oldest landscaped gardens across the globe.

Boulder Gardens

The Boulder Gardens comprise of an assortment of natural boulders. These boulders have been the basis for the Buddhist monastery.

Water Gardens

The ponds and bathing pools of the royal family would have looked amazing back in the day. Sigiriya has an advance irrigation system and the use off engineering and hydraulics are way beyond its time.

Frescos

The attractive Sigiriya damsels are iconic to Sigiriya. There are twenty-one pictures of scantly dressed ladies painted on the walls

Mirror Wall

The mirror wall is a polished wall that the king had used to look at his reflection. Its no longer shiny but there are scribbles made by visitors for the last 1500 years.

At the Peak

When you reach the summit, it feels like you’ve achieved something great! The final walk up the vertiginous staircase ends with the spectacle from above. If you go in the evening, wait to watch the sunset.

Day 3 – Kandy

Kandy

Kandy is the hill capital and most sacred city in Sri Lanka. The second-largest city, it remains the gateway to the opulent hill country of Sri Lanka.

Surrounded by the Kandy Lake, the city if full of splendor and charm.

Kandy is part of the cultural triangle that consists of Anuradhapura – Polonnaruwa, and Kandy.

The last ancient kingdom of Sri Lanka, it has been the stronghold of the Sinhalese until the final upheaval by the British in 1815.

Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a selection of historically significant temples and cultural monuments.

Kandy is home to the renowned Peradeniya Botanical Garden and is known to carry rich traditions among those living in the city.

Temple of the Tooth

Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) is considered as the most holy Buddhist temple in the country. The temple houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha.

Due to this Buddhists around the world visit the temple in gratitude. The sacred relic is placed in a golden casket and kept in a guarded shrine room.

The room is open three times a day for prayers and offerings. If you go during these times there is a chance to see the holy vestige.

You will not see the actual relics but the golden casket shaped in a stupa. Annually there is a perahera (procession) organized by the temple called the ‘Esala Perahera’.

This is the biggest Buddhist festival in the country and the celebrations take up to two weeks. Sixty-five elephants parade on the Esala Perahera.

Kandy Lake

Kandy Lake is constructed in the center of the city. Built by the last king of Lanka, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, it is an additional feature to the beautifully constructed temple of the tooth.

Despite being located in the bustling city center, there is a sense of serenity when taking a stroll around it. The boat rides on the lake are fun and are ideal for any age group.

Visit a tea plantation

As one of the most prominent tea producing countries in the world, a visit to a tea plantation when in Sri Lanka is vital. The country is home to an extensive number of tea plantations and Kandy has a few of them.

The tea plants on the hilly areas are a mesmerizing sight. The Giragama tea plantation is a short drive from the city but you can easily cover it in your two-day stay.

Going to a tea plantation and seeing up close the refining process of some of the best teas in the world is well worth it.

There is a tea museum on the premises and you can taste the teas and take some back home when you leave.

Day 4 – Colombo

Colombo

Colombo is the biggest city in Sri Lanka. It is the commercial capital that brings together people of different cultures from all parts of the island.

Skyscrapers, colonial heritage, high-end shopping, great dining, and the urban buzz of the city make it one of the best cities to live in.

National Museum

The Nation Museum is located in the centre of the city. Sri Lanka has a history spanning over two thousand five hundred years. Established in the18th century the museum displays artifacts from different eras in history.

Sri Lankan art, sculptures, carvings as well as other items related to local kingdoms are also displayed here. The royal throne made for King Wimaladharma is displayed at the museum.

Pettah Market

Pettah has the busiest market in Colombo. Brimming with people, noise, and a lot of commotion sums up what Pettah is all about. It’s a place that sells everything you need from A to Z.

The rates are cheaper than what is available in stores in the city. All the streets are jam-packed with people and vehicles. The best time to visit Pettah is at 10 am when the shops start to open.

You can’t even think of going in a vehicle but there is a parking lot close by where you can get off and walk.

Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is situated in the heart of Colombo. It is one of the best places in the city to fly kites, take a stroll, enjoy street food, and watch the sunset. It’s a family-friendly place where you see children running around in the evenings.

That doesn’t mean it’s only for families but for anyone looking to enjoy the sea breeze. Make sure to try the street food such as ‘isso wadey’ and ‘Kottu’ served at the small eateries on the green.
