Transfers from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport to Ella By Train
Traveling by train from BIA to Ella is possible, but due to lack of a direct line, two changes of transport are required.
To embark on the train trip you first need to get to a train station. Most convenient is the Katunayaka South railway station some 2.5 kilometers from the airport.
You can reach it either by taxi, tuk-tuk or by boarding 187 line bus at Katunayake bus stop or Katunayake Airport Bus Station, which are located around a kilometer from the airport or almost halfway to the railway station you wish to reach.
187 line buses depart every 20 or so minutes the almost whole day. From the Katunayaka South railway station, there are 15 departures to Ragama on the weekdays.
The first being at 0520 and the last at 2025. On Saturdays, there are nine departures, with the first being at the same time as on workdays, while the last one is at 1928. On Sundays, there are six departures, with the first one being also at the same time, but the last departure of the day is at 1846.
Once you arrive at Ragama, you can board the train for Ella. Daily there are for departures for Badulla that stop at Ella, they depart at 0618, 0851, 1007, and 2025.

Transfer from Colombo Airport to Ella By Bus
Traveling by bus from Colombo Airport to Ella is similarly complicated as by train for the same reason, lack of a direct line.
The first step is similar to traveling by train, you need to reach either Katunayake bus stop or Katunayake Airport Bus Station. They are 900 meters and 1.1 kilometers, respectively, away from the airport, and you can reach them either on foot, by taxi or tuk-tuk.
There you should catch a line 187 bus and ride it to the Colombo Bastian Mawatha bus terminal. Line 187 buses run every 20 or so minutes.
At Colombo Bastian Mawatha bus terminal you should embar either on a line 98/9 for Bibila, 99 for Badulla, or 99/8 for Monaragala bus, all three are passing through Ella. The 98/9 departs every day at 2100, 99 every day at 2200, 2300, 2320 and 2359; and 99/8 every day at 2020.
