Guide On How To Transfer From Colombo (Bandaranaike International Airport) To Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Located on a 10 hectares former coconut plantations, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has become a synonym for Sri Lankan elephants among visitors. Founded with the aim of caring for abandoned calves found wandering alone across the island, today it houses a herd of around 90 elephants, which makes it the largest captive herd of elephants in the world.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the only facility in Sri Lanka that is at the same time an orphanage, nursery, breeding ground, and sanctuary for the animals with special needs.
Twice a day whole herd is taken to the nearby Maha Oya river, where they are watered while visitors can watch little babies of these majestic animals happily play in the river.
Once upon a time herds of dozen or two were freely roaming the forests and countryside of Sri Lanka, but with development and expansion of towns and cities, and shrinking of the natural habitats of wild elephants, their numbers are dwindling.
For this reason, places like Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage are playing a more and more important role in the preservation of these majestic animals.
At this peaceful sanctuary for elephants visitors can see how the animals are cared for, including elephants with special needs such as a blind male and female which have lost a front leg to a land mine. How they are fed every day and how baby elephants are bottle-fed. And also learn about the elephants in the wild of Sri Lanka.
