Day 1 - Airport to Anuradhapura
Day 1 - Airport to Anuradhapura

When you arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, a T2 Travels representative will be waiting for you ready to meet and greet you. Then we will start on our journey to Anuradhapura.

Traveling along the coast we will reach the town of Chilaw. Here is the Munneswaram Kovil, a Hindu temple which according to legend predates the events of epic Ramayana. It is a place where Lord Rama prayed to Shiva asking for the absolution of killing Lord Ravana.

According to Ramayana, his prayers were answered with instructions to erect four lingams, representations of Shiva, at four specific locations. The very first he did is at today’s place of the Manavari Kovil, a Hindu temple we will also visit. Because it was the first one, the lingam of this temple is called Ramalinga Shivam.

In the afternoon, we will explore the Ancient city of Anuradhapura. This city was the capital of ancient Sinhalese civilization since it was founded in the 4th century BC, and until its sacking around 1017 AD. It is known as the place where one of the earliest Buddhist teachings were recorded, the Pali Canon. Often is referred to as a holy city, because many places of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage are located here.

Day 2 - Anuradhapura to Trincomalee

After breakfast at the hotel in Anuradhapura, we will get on our way to Trincomalee.

Arriving in the city of Trincomalee, we will visit the Kanniya Hot Water Spring. According to a Hindu legend, these seven hot springs were created when Lord Ravana hit the ground seven times with his sword.

Afterward, we will visit the Koneswaram Kovil. This Hindu temple has a history that started in the 1st century BC. Over the centuries it was destroyed and rebuilt several times, and before the last destruction in 1622 by Portuguese it was known as the Temple of Thousand Pillars, for having “Aayiram Kaal Mandapam” a thousand pillars hall.

Near this temple is a smaller shrine that we will visit. Known as the Shankari Devi Kovil. According to Hindu teachings, it is one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Pithas, places in the world where parts of the body of a goddess Shakti fell, and which are places of pilgrimage.

Then we will visit one of the only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka, Pigeon Island National Park. This small rocky island is surrounded by a thriving colony of corals, which are thus home to a very rich ecosystem. Because of its beauty, it is a very popular snorkeling place.

This ancient citadel and the city which surrounds it, below the rock, were built between 477 and 495 AD. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very popular tourist spot.

In the afternoon we will embark on the Jeep Safari through Minneriya National Park. This national park is a place where during the dry period animals from surrounding areas migrate in search of food and water. Being located on the shores of a 3rd century artificial lake, Minneriya Wewa, it is rich in both. Here, often can be seen the largest gathering of wild Sri Lankan elephants.

This temple has existed since at least the 1st century BC. Over centuries it grew from one to five caves, which were gilded and decorated and pillared entrances to them were constructed. The interiors of caves, over centuries, were decorated by more than 2,100 square meters of religious wall paintings, depicting the life and teachings of Buddha.
