Things To See & Do in Trincomalee

Trincomalee, also known as Thirukonamalai (a Tamil word for; thiru-holy, konam-name, Malai-mountain: “Lord of the Sacred Hill”) is a city in Sri Lanka. Trincomalee is located 257km away from Colombo, in the Trincomalee district of the North-eastern coast. It is one of the main places in Sri Lanka where Tamil is spoken at large scale. A place like this has endless numbers of fun activities. Despite the distance from the international airport, it has earned the love of many tourists.

Trincomalee bay

Trincomalee Bay, also known as Koddiyar Bay, is a bay in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka. It is located by Trincomalee town on the north-east coast of Sri Lanka. The Bay of Trincomalee at the time, opened by English Admiral Nelson, is considered the deepest bay in the world. As it is enclosed and deep, it forms a large natural harbour in the shores of the Indian ocean. This Harbour was originally a naval base of the Royal Navy, but it was taken over by the Sri Lankan Government in 1956 to be developed as a commercial port.

Nilaveli beach

Nilaveli beach has been considered one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for years now. “Nilaveli” means “moon shines over the land or open space” in the Tamil language. This beach is a quiet relaxing beach where you can peacefully chill. Its large beach isn’t only famous for its sandy shores and clear waters, it’s also famous for the coastal cities located near the beach. A place nearby that is very popular with tourists is Uppuveli, which is another long beach, great for swimming.

Uppuveli beach

Uppuveli is also a long, sandy beach with clear waters and no waves. It attracts a bigger crowd than Nilaveli Beach as there is a better vibe and festive atmosphere. When people talk of Trincomalee, most of the time they are actually talking about Uppuveli. Uppuveli has a fun, crowded area and a strip of good, delicious and cultural places to eat. This beach is a great place to have a swim and grab a delicious lunch after it.

Pigeon Island national park

Among all the places to see near Nilaveli beach, one must is pigeon island national park, which is located about 2km from the shore. This island is beautiful enough with its paths and rock pools but the real wonders of this place happen underwater, making it the ideal place for snorkelling. The thing you will see underwater will seem like a charming whole new world. It will feel like you stepped into another endless dimension.

The Koneswaram temple

The Koneswaram temple is a classical medieval temple in Trincomalee. It is a Hindu religious pilgrimage spot in the eastern province of Sri Lanka. The name Koneswaram is gained from the Hindu god Shiva, who reigns over the mountain of holy Konam.”Konam” is believed to come from the old Tamil word for “peak”. This Hindu temple was destroyed by the Portuguese during the period in which they held sway in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka.

The modern temple today is built on the ruins of the old temple. This historical monument used to be equal to the ancient city of Madurai, India. What you can see now is the remains of this beautiful and religious monument. It bears a history of over 3000 years all beginning in 1580BC. This monument is visited by several cultures and countries. Pilgrims from all over the world visit the temple just to offer their services to god Shiva.

Marble beach

Marble beach isn’t exactly in Trincomalee, it’s located about 17km from Trincomalee and is managed by the Sri Lankan air force which is also located there. The name “ marble beach” is given from the fact that the surface of the ocean can be seen as a shining and smooth marble. At the north end of the cove, there is a resort which is more peaceful than the south end which is more crowded. This beach is also popular for snorkelling due to the various coloured creatures that live there. The salty water is so clear that it feels surreal and unrealistic.

Whale and dolphin watching

To see a Blue Whale in its natural habitat is something that seems completely unrealistic, like a dream. The best time to go whale watching in Sri Lanka is from May to October but July has been the best time for Blue Whale sightings in Sri Lanka. Not only can you watch the world’s biggest creature swim across the ocean you can also see friendly dolphins jumping with joy.

The best time to watch dolphins is as the same as whales, so from May to October. If you are heading to Trincomalee make sure jump on aboard a whale and dolphin watching expedition in Sri Lanka for an experience of a lifetime and don’t miss out on one of nature’s biggest wildlife spectacles in the Ocean.

Scuba diving and snorkelling

In a place like this scuba diving and snorkelling is very famous. Even on your way there, you will see thousands of signs about scuba diving and snorkelling. One of the best places to go snorkelling will have to be Pigeon island where if you are lucky enough you will be able to spot turtles or even sharks. As for Scuba diving, you could go to Nilaveli beach which is right next to pigeon island. You will be given a few lessons on Scuba diving, making it educative and fun!

Fishing

Fishing in Trincomalee is an exciting outdoor activity. Trincomalee is one of the best and safest places to fish on the east coast of Sri Lanka. It’s also one of the best places for professional game fishing and deep-sea fishing. You can fish Sharks, Marlins, Tunas, and the big names in deep-water game fishing roam in Sri Lanka’s deep seas. It is recommended for amateurs, beginners, families and the catch is guaranteed for all.
