Day 1 – Airport to Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya

Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, a T2 Travel representative will be waiting ready to meet and greet you. And we will proceed on our way to Nuwara Eliya.

On our way, we will pass through the city of Kandy, the former capital of Sinhalese civilization whose royal palace complex is home to one of the holiest places of worship for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the temple built specifically to house one of the most venerated Buddhist relics, the sacred relic of Buddha’s tooth.

Sri Lanka is an island where some of the most stunning and some of the most famous in the world gems were unearthed. And we will visit the Gem Museum, where you can learn about the mining of precious stones and their trade with the rest of the world, which lasts since millennia ago.

Continuing on our way, we will arrive in the village of Ramboda and optionally visit the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Kovil. The temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, a member of the Hindu pantheon and one of the central characters of Indian epic Ramayana. A short way from this temple is located Ramboda Ella, a beautiful tiered waterfall over which waters of Panna Oya River fall in the shape of the letter Y.

Our first stop of the day will be high above the clouds, some 2 kilometers above sea level where the Horton Plains National Park is situated. This natural reserve is a place of high biodiversity and one of the most popular hiking locations. The most striking feature of the park is the World’s End, a sheer cliff precipice that rises almost 1,200 meters above the valley below. It offers one of the most amazing views of the lowlands, but which is obscured most of the day by mists that settle above the valley in the morning.

Continuing on our way, we will visit two places that are closely related to the events described in the Ramayana. The Ravana Ella waterfalls, at which princess Sitha bathed during her captivity in Ravana Cave. Besides the mythical history, these two places are of enchanting beauty. The Ravana Cave is also an archeological site where were discovered the evidence of human habitation reaching as far back as 25,000 years ago.

Arriving in Ella we will visit one of the most popular hiking locations, the Little Adam’s Peak. Continuing on our way, we will embark on a jeep safari through Udawalawe National Park.
